7. I want to change careers. How do I clarify my goals?

Changing of Careers can be possible in a variety of permutation & Combinations. A lot many Production Engineers have changed their careers to become Sales Personnel and work for well known Engineering Companies. A lot many Sales Personnel have become Client Relations Executives. A fair number of Secretaries have changed companies or have met their HR Head( Human Resources Head ) to explore the possibility of attaining greater Job Content & Responsibilities.

What we are trying to point out here is that a Career Change should not meerly be because you are finding it difficult to cope with the Targets allotted to you. You must first remember that you have to prepare a 'Life Time Career Plan/Outline' that helps to regularly remind yourself where you want to be every 2 years hence in terms of your Job Content/Challenge Content, Learning Content, Growth within the organisation, Growth within yourself (as an Individual), Growth in Society/Social Standing, Remuneration, Life Style, Achievements. This is the best method of Clarifying your Goals. You must remember that a lot many Interview Panels would ask you the same question - " Where do you see yourself 2 years from now, or 5 years from now?" They are all professionals who assume that you are their equals and must have similarly prepared your 'Life Time Career Plan/Outline'.

You would want to ideally discuss with your HR head about your career plans and let him guide you regards the best steps to achieve the same preferably within the organisation. If you find that your Career goals are not being met it is only then that a change must be contemplated.

8. How do I know whether I would be able to achieve the goals that I have set for myself in the 'Life Time Career Plan/Outline' ?

Do I love to mistreat & order around my servant/junior or do I treat him in a humane fashion? 9. I haven't found a permanent job I want. Should I take a temporary position?

It makes sense in having an assignment that keeps your mind busy rather than remain idle until you get a parmanent assignment. You might just find that your existing temporary assignment helps you attain greater heights in future.

10. I have been offered a position in another state, but my spouse is employed here. What options do we have to resolve this situation?

A good offer is a scarce commodity nowadays. Grab the same. If your spouse is so well qualified that a job would be waiting at the next destination then, do not delay in advising your spouse regards the advantages of resigning his/her present assignment (obviously after you ensure that he/she has the new appointment letter). However if not so highly qualified then ask him/her to retain his/her present assignment and start giving interviews as per advertisements that appear in various media. Also Submit the same to ONIRECRUITMENTS.COM and let us help you find a job for your spouse free of charge while you work for your new company.

Assuming that you were unwell and trying to recoup from any ailment/operation, it is important to mention the same on your Resume. Submit the same to ONIRECRUITMENTS.COM. The prospective employer is bound to try and take advantage of your absense from the market by offering you a lower salary package. If your effort and luck holds then you are certain to get what you desire, otherwise grab what you get and if you are good and efficient then, you are bound to find your niche amongst the successful few within a few months itself.

12. When enquiring about a job, is it better to call or write a letter?

Both. Send your Bio-Data by E-mail/Quorier/post and follow the same up with a personal phone call aimed at fixing a mutually convenient appointment. Remember, consultants that are truely professionsal cannot really make any genuine effort regards your Bio-Data until and unless they meet you face to face. Some meet you but do not waste time in guiding you regards the career path that you must take for a better future. Good Consultants do so.

13. I have held several jobs in a relatively short time. Will employers view that negatively?

Very Negatively ! They would rate you as a candidate who is unsteady. Prospective employers would look at you through jaundiced eyes.

Try to ensure that you work with honesty and dedication in your present company. Leaving or joining any company should best be determined by your 'Life Time Career Plan/Outline'.

14. What should I expect at a job interview and how do I prepare for it?

Any interviewer would want to see and analyse for himself whether the prospective employee fits the profile that is ideally desired by his organisation. For example, Relevant Age, Fitting Qualification, Matching or more Experience, Contacts in the desired area, ability to srategise, means for further sources of prospects etc may be the required parameters for a vacancy. If you are an Engineer looking after Manufacturing for example, they would want to know how much knowledge and experience do you have on the subject. If you are a fresher and possess knowledge and experience that is not expected at your level - your market value increases. Theefore gain experience also outside the ambit of your given responsibility and speak about how much more you know than the other run of the mill candidates.

You can prepare yourself as above, or you may prepare constant mock sessions for yourself.

15. What is the correct way to follow up an interview?

Sending your Resume repeatedly after fixed intervals is a good strategy at a junior or junior middle level. But the same strategy works negatively at Middle and Senior level positions. At the Middle and Senior levels personal Rapport with your Consultancy or Target Company is very important. If you suddenly decide to Entertain in a High Class Restaurant or well known Club either the Consultancy or Target Company then, your intentions become suspect. Entertain them at regular intervals throughout your life. Dine, play Golf, meet at the same club those very people who are important to your future.

16. Should I tell a prospective employer that I make more money than I really do?

No, you must not!

Note: A fair number of companies may want to recruit a good candidate at a low salary, especially one who is unaware about his market value. Visit ONIRECRUITMENTS.COM TO be more aware about the same. You must avoid quoting your montly take home. You must as a habit quote the actual CTC, that is the total cost that the company bears to keep you with itself.

At any interview give the break up of the actual salary plus benefits which includes for example,

Basic Salary, House Rent, House to Office Travelling Allowance, Monthly Medical Allowance, Books & Periodicals Allowance, LTA(Leave Travelling Allowance ), Company Contribution to Medical Insurance for Self & Family, Grauity, Bonus, Provident Fund,Driver Salary, Depreciated Value of Car/Mobile Hand Set, Car Fuel Value, ( total Cost to Company - CTC ).

17. I am over 50. How should I approach the job search differently?

No difference really. See point 7 & 8

18. There is a position I'm really interested in. Should I lower my salary expectations to secure the job offer?

If you feel that the loss in Salary is compensated by the gains from the Job, well go ahead. In your Career, Job Content, Promotion or Growth Prospects, Growth of the Company in the last few years, Qualification of your immediate superiors, your remuneration etc all matter in a decision making process. The salary alone does not tilt the balance.

19. How do I negotiate salary?

25.How would a Prospective Employer interview me, especially if he is geographically far away ?

Interviews can be
  • Over the Telephone

Normally the Prospective Employer expresses the time and venue that would best suite himself, but with changing times the 'mutually suitable' time and venue route is being agreed upon. Depending upon the geographical distance, time and cost factors, the existing technology available in your country etc.,any or a combination of two or more of the alternatives mentioned above are being considered.
